We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin.

For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, ^asold under sin.

Οἴδαμεν γὰρ ὅτι ὁ νόμος πνευματικός ἐστιν· ἐγὼ δὲ ▼

σάρκινός εἰμι, πεπραμένος ὑπὸ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν.

I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

For I do not understand my own actions. For ^cI do not do what I want, but I do the very thing I hate.

ὃ γὰρ κατεργάζομαι οὐ γινώσκω· οὐ γὰρ ὃ θέλω τοῦτο πράσσω, ἀλλ᾽ ὃ μισῶ τοῦτο ποιῶ.

And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good.

Now if I do what I do not want, I agree with ^dthe law, that it is good.

εἰ δὲ ὃ οὐ θέλω τοῦτο ποιῶ, σύμφημι τῷ νόμῳ ὅτι καλός.

As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me.

So now ^eit is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells within me.

νυνὶ δὲ οὐκέτι ἐγὼ κατεργάζομαι αὐτὸ ἀλλὰ ἡ ▼

οἰκοῦσα ἐν ἐμοὶ ἁμαρτία.

For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature. ▼

For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out.

For I know that nothing good dwells ^hin me, that is, in my flesh. For I have the desire to do what is right, but not the ability to carry it out.

οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι οὐκ οἰκεῖ ἐν ἐμοί, τοῦτ᾽ ἔστιν ἐν τῇ σαρκί μου, ἀγαθόν· τὸ γὰρ θέλειν παράκειταί μοι, τὸ δὲ κατεργάζεσθαι τὸ καλὸν ▼

For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing.

Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it.

So I find this law at work: although I want to do good, evil is right there with me.

So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand.

Εὑρίσκω ἄρα τὸν νόμον τῷ θέλοντι ἐμοὶ ποιεῖν τὸ καλὸν ὅτι ἐμοὶ τὸ κακὸν παράκειται·

For in my inner being I delight in God’s law;

For ^mI delight in the law of God, ⁿin my inner being,

συνήδομαι γὰρ τῷ νόμῳ τοῦ θεοῦ κατὰ τὸν ἔσω ἄνθρωπον,

but I see another law at work in me, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within me.

but I see in my members ^oanother law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members.

βλέπω δὲ ἕτερον νόμον ἐν τοῖς μέλεσίν μου ἀντιστρατευόμενον τῷ νόμῳ τοῦ νοός μου καὶ αἰχμαλωτίζοντά με ▼

ἐν τῷ νόμῳ τῆς ἁμαρτίας τῷ ὄντι ἐν τοῖς μέλεσίν μου.

What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death?

Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from ^qthis body of death?

ταλαίπωρος ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος· τίς με ῥύσεται ἐκ τοῦ σώματος τοῦ θανάτου τούτου;

So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature ▼

a slave to the law of sin.
